“You should shower more often,” said my friend one morning.
OK. C’mon. Do tell.
What’s going through your mind right now?
Why did she say this?
Where were we when she said it?
What’s our relationship?
Full disclosure …

We’re friends. Just friends.
We were online, speaking on Zoom.
I’d just mentioned an idea I’d had while in the shower that morning.
You’re disappointed now?
Sorry!
Nature … taking a refreshing shower …
These musings came to be while emptying the washing machine.
Many years ago, the core idea for a workshop design I’d been struggling with during the previous weeks, came to me while walking in the freezing streets of Gamla Stan, Stockholm. Within 10 minutes of taking refuge in a warm café, I had noted down the outline.
I have no idea how writing I’ve done and how many insights I’ve had while walking in nature.
While the spark for cultureQs came from a client challenge, the ideas for the concept as well as the initial development work came together on a beach in Northern France.
Do you want to hear about the idea I had this morning while sitting in the smallest room of my apartment?
No? Good decision!
But I bet you’ve had ideas there too.
Where do ideas come from?
During an interview about his songs and songwriting, Leonard Cohen answered Paul Zollo’s (the interviewer) Question … “Is it a sense that you are reaching outside of yourself to write these songs?” …
“If I knew where the songs came from, I’d go there more often. It’s a mysterious condition.”
(From Paul Zollo, Songwriters on Songwriting)
There’s no real way of knowing where ideas come from … so why should we be obsessed with defining it?
Anyway, it’s always, inevitably, individual, like all our preferences in life.
… one of over 300 Questions currently in the cultureQs Suite of Products that you can access here … People need space to be themselves in order to contribute to any social group, especially while working.

Where do your ideas come to you?
Hiya Eric. Thanks for the Leonard Cohen quote. I've added it to a page of similar quotes (https://newcreate.org/creative-imagination-at-work/) from Paul McCartney, Sting, Lionel Rirchie and others. Here's my favourite: During an appearance on the television show BBC Breakfast, the acclaimed film composer David Arnold was asked how he goes about composing music. He replied: “You walk around with your aerials out and it gets delivered to you. It’s more about feeling it than thinking about it.”
I've mentioned this Substack below the Leonard Cohen quote and included a link.
Very best wishes from the west of England.
